How a letter can inspire you and then gut you

I received a letter on Tuesday from one of the true gentlemen of our sport -  Jack Griffen.  Many of you know this former Inverell now Port Macquarie stalwart who has been involved in all 48 Grafton to Inverell’s one way or the other.  Jack wrote to me about a story in a Melbourne newspaper.  He was making me aware of this article and as I was reading the letter and then checking out the story I was thinking “gee, isn’t it fantastic that I have such great members and friends out there who are “looking after” the sport by keeping me in touch with things that are happening any where in Australia.  I then started to finish the letter and all within a few words my heart missed a few beats and I felt – well I felt empty, drained, motionless as these few words sunk in.  Jack was telling me that he had just learnt of the sudden and tragic death of Murray Coxon.  Murray was just 34 and he was a great bike rider in his younger days.  It wouldn’t have mattered if he was a great young rider or not, I remember Murray and I was deeply saddened to learn of his death.  I hadn’t heard not even by the normally reliable “bush telegraph”.  I now offer my deepest sympathies to Murray’s family and friends.  It is a sad loss and it may be clichéd – but Murray was a member of the cycling family – our family – so the loss is extended beyond his immediate family and close friends.  Rest in peace Murray.

Innovative, hard yards and great promotions!

I am continually being impressed by clubs and small committee’s who are finding sponsor dollars, introducing new and challenging events and offering great opportunities for our riders.  On this occasion we need look no further than Southern Cross, Bicisport and Lidcombe.  Bicisport advertised their prize-money originally as $3,000 but they are now heading fast towards $7,000!  Fantastic effort!  Lidcombe Auburn had an incredible 50 odd club members attend the Tour Down Under but somewhere along the line they have had time to come up with a new event concept – the gladiators.  Sure I have to wait and see how the event pans out but even before its held the mere fact they have come up with something like this is Fantastic stuff!  Get on their website and take a look at what they are doing and Southern Cross are hosting another great promotion and they too should be congratulated for their hard work and effort.  Well done all round.

Great Response

Too early to tell if our commissaire and volunteer numbers will increase as a result of my story last week but I am heartened by the number of emails I received supporting the story or offering much valued information.  I sincerely thank each of you that took time to put your thoughts in writing.

Just who will master the DGV this weekend?

It’s a busy weekend for our Masters as they hit the boards for state championship honours.  Some great racing is promised and I have a feeling we may see some upsets!

Infield at Masters

It’s not the most ideal outcome but we have managed to gain an exemption for “riders assistants” at this weekends Masters Championships.  A cordoned off area will be located at the northern end of the DGV [main stairwell] for “riders assistants”.  Those wishing to be included in this area will not be permitted to go outside of this designated area other than when leaving the infield.  You will not be allowed to join competitors in their area but they may visit you.  Normal entrance fees will apply.  Handlers [persons who hold up or push cyclists] will be permitted to do so only when they are acting in that capacity.  “Full time” handlers will be given full access.

Annual General Meeting

The AGM Super-weekend is to be held on Saturday 21st and Sunday 22nd April 2007.  Elections will take place for president, vice presidents, selectors and handicappers.

In relation to each office bearer, all nominations shall be in writing, signed by the nominee, and be in accordance with By-Law [111d].  On receipt of the nominations the Federation office shall circulate the list of nominees to all Clubs within seven [7] days.

By-Law 111[d] Nomination of Office Bearers: Nominations of all Office Bearers signed by the proposer, seconder and nominee, must be received by the Federation not less than thirty [30] clear days before the date of the Annual Meeting.

KEY DATES [please take note]

Friday 16th March 2007 Nominations for positions
    Close [end of business day]

Coaching and Development

Junior U/19 and U/17 cyclists who have goals of performing well in 2007, 2008 and 2009 Junior Road selection events now have an opportunity to improve their future performances.

NSWIS/Cycling NSW coaching and regional development coordinator Graham Seers is holding 2 training camps over the race courses that are to be used as part of the selection by Cycling Australia of the 2007 Australian Junior Road team,  to compete at the  Junior World Road Racing Championships being held in Aguascalientes,  Mexico.

These camps are for U17 and U19 riders only. It is the athlete’s responsibility to ensure that they are capable of riding for 2 to 3 hours maintaining an average speed of 30km/hr in a bunch with other riders.

Parents and personal coaches are invited to attend the camp. All travel and accommodation will need to be organized and it is suggested you travel with club members or in a group to keep costs down. $25 per day per rider will be charged as a coaching fee.

The first camp will take place in Canberra on the 24th and 25th February, preparing for the Canberra Tour on the 27th – 29th April.

The camp coordinates with the Goulburn Track Carnival on the Saturday night so bring your track bike and enter the carnival if you ride the track, as a large group of NSW will be travelling to the carnival from Canberra and competing.

The riders will be based at the
Forrest Inn & Apartments, 30 National Cct, Forrest, ACT, 2603.
T: 02 6295 3433, F: 02 6295 2119
E: admin@forrestinn.com.au, W: www.forrestinn.com.au

There is limited accommodation still available, however there are a number of motels in the area.

Riders will need to arrive Friday as the rides will depart from the Forrest Inn at the below times:

Saturday

                        7:00am 3 hour light ride
                       11:00am            debrief
                        Evening            Goulburn Track Carnival

Sunday

                        7.00am             3 hour light ride
                        10:30am            debrief
                        Depart

The 2nd camp in Mooball will take place on the 24th and 25th of March preparing for the tour on the 3rd – 6th of May which will also be the U/19 National TT and Road Race championships.

All accommodation will need to be organized by athletes and a brief will be out at a later date.

The idea of the camps is to be riding in organized groups over the courses with other NSW riders and EAP riders, after the rides athletes, parents and coaches will be able to ask questions on the course tactics and training required to assist with the preparation for these events.
