MEDIA RELEASE
02.04.09
The 49th edition of the Grafton to Inverell Cycle Classic will be held on September 12th. Organisers have confirmed the date after negotiations with Cycling NSW finalised last week.
The 228km race regarded as the toughest one day race in Australia will again be sponsored by McDonalds who are in their second year as the major sponsor for the event.
The race will follow the same format as last year with three grades contesting the 228km course with the cream of Australia’s domestic cyclists to compete.
The Celtic Country Classic de Femme will attract some of the best female cyclists in the country to race over the 95km journey from Glen Innes to Inverell.
Organisers have also confirmed the running of the Junior under 19’s race from Glen Innes to Inverell for the second time. They are confident the junior race will become one of the biggest junior one day races on the calender with up and coming riders keen to race over some of the course of the classic.
The Grafton to Inverell will once again be a category one event on the National Road Series conducted by Cycling Australia. Last years series was closely contested with the Grafton to Inverell deciding the winner with David Pell snatching the series win with his win in the race.
For more information, interviews or photo’s contact Peter Sunderland, Media Liaison, Grafton to Inverell Cycle Classic, on 0402 983 438 or email petersunderland@bigpond.com
Cyclists are constantly under scrutiny about their behavior when out training. We again appeal for commonsense by riders by following a few basic rules.
- Train in smaller bunches as large bunches tend to intimidate many inexperienced motorists and pose a hazard for heavy transport vehicles.
- Ensure when training early morning and of an evening you have front and rear lights switched on with good batteries.
- When riding two abreast keep as far to the left as possible at all times.
- Be courteous to other motorists and road users.
- Do NOT run red lights. Obey the traffic rules at all times.
- If you see another rider doing the wrong thing have a quiet word to them.
I am in dialogue with Police and RTA constantly about issues and road event approvals. Provided we do the right thing these authorities will generally try to assist us with our requests. It is getting harder for us in our negotiations for assistance when issues are being raised of riders not acting responsible.
Please, I urge all Cyclists to help us to help yourselves. Do the right thing when out on the road otherwise we will find ourselves restricted to secondary roads and offroad circuits and the sport and members will suffer.
It is up to you!

Michelle Ferris becomes a World Masters Games Ambassador
The Sydney 2009 World Masters Games Organising Committee today announced Australian cycling legend, two-time Olympic silver medallist Michelle Ferris, as an ambassador for the world’s largest multi-sport event later this year.
Runner-up to Felicia Ballanger in both the women’s 1,000 metres sprint at the 1996 Atlanta Olympics and the women’s 500m time trial in Sydney four years later, Ms Ferris has stood atop of dais since joining the Masters track cycling ranks.
Always up for a challenge, Ms Ferris plans to contest the road cycling events at the Games. Sydney 2000 Olympic venue Dunc Gray Velodrome will host the track events, with the various road events split between four venues in the city’s western suburbs.
“The Sydney 2009 World Masters Games appeal to me because they’re a chance for sportspeople of all ages and abilities from all around the globe to come together in an Olympic city to celebrate their love of sport and passion for life,” Ms Ferris said.
Running 10-18 October, the Games are open to everyone rather than just elite athletes and will see 25,000 people from more than 100 countries compete in 28 sports across 72 Sydney venues, including many famous Olympic sites.
To enter the Games people need only meet their sport’s minimum age, which ranges between 25 and 35 years. Cycling is open to people aged 30 plus, something that applies to the majority of the 28 sports on the Games program.
“This October in Sydney, thousands of everyday people will have extraordinary experiences at the world’s largest multi-sport event. You can be one of them,” Games Organising Committee Chief Executive Officer Shane O’Leary said.
“It doesn’t matter how good or how old you are. Everyone’s invited to take part in this great festival of sport. The Sydney 2009 World Masters Games are all about being fit, fun and forever young. Don’t miss out on your opportunity of a lifetime.”
Ms Ferris has joined the list of Games Ambassadors that includes Olympic champions Lord Sebastian Coe, Murray Rose and Daniel Kowalski.
